About the print

He left the hand hanging. Before the 1974 World Cup the Chilean squad was lined up in front of Augusto Pinochet, one year into a dictatorship that had already killed and disappeared thousands of people.

The general worked down the line shaking hands. When he reached Carlos Caszely, the striker kept his arms at his sides. The cameras were running. His own mother had been arrested and tortured by the regime's secret police.

He went on refusing in public for years, campaigning openly for the No vote in the 1988 referendum that ended the dictatorship. He was the most famous forward in the country and he never once pretended.
