Castel di Sangro Art Print, Serie B 1996, Vintage Italian Football Wall Art
€44.90
About the print
Five thousand. That is roughly how many people lived in Castel di Sangro, a town in the mountains of Abruzzo, when its football club was promoted to Serie B in 1996. No smaller municipality had ever reached the second division of Italian football.
The season that followed drew an American writer, Joe McGinniss, who stayed for the whole of it and published the account in 1999. What he found was not only the sporting fairytale. On 10 December 1996 two players, Danilo Di Vincenzo and Filippo Biondi, were killed in a car crash. The club finished the season and stayed up.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
