Dorando Pietri Art Print, London 1908 Marathon, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
Five falls in the last lap. Dorando Pietri came into the White City stadium in the lead and turned the wrong way. Over the final three hundred and eighty five yards he went down five times.
Officials lifted him up, and by lifting him up they disqualified him. He crossed the line first and left with nothing.
The next day Queen Alexandra presented him with a gilded silver cup of her own, because ninety thousand people had watched a man refuse to stop moving and had quietly decided that the result was beside the point. He never won an Olympic medal. He is the only man most people can name from that race.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
