About the print

They would not say who was first. On 29 May 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest, and the world immediately demanded to know which of them had stepped onto it first. Nepal wanted one answer, India another, Britain a third.

The two men agreed between themselves that they would not tell anyone. For years they gave the same reply: that they had arrived together, as a team.

Hillary eventually wrote that he had been a pace or two ahead, long after it could be used against Tenzing. There is a photograph of Tenzing on the summit. There is none of Hillary, because Tenzing had never used a camera.
