About the print
54-52. Houston were top ranked and called Phi Slama Jama, a team of dunks with Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler in it. North Carolina State had lost ten games that season and were not supposed to be there at all.
Tied at fifty two with the clock running out, Dereck Whittenburg let go from thirty feet. The shot fell short of the rim. Lorenzo Charles, a sophomore, caught it in the air and put it through with one second left.
Their coach Jim Valvano ran onto the court looking for somebody to embrace, and could not find anyone. It is the only image most people keep of that night.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
