Steven Bradbury Art Print, He Was Still Upright, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
The first, for a whole hemisphere. Steven Bradbury was last in the 1000 metres final and stayed there. Going into the final corner the four skaters ahead of him touched, tangled and went down together, and he crossed the line alone with his arms out.
He had reached that final the same way, through a quarter final and a semi final decided by other people's crashes and disqualifications.
Eight years earlier a blade had opened his thigh and cost him one hundred and eleven stitches. Two years before the Games he broke his neck in training. It was the first Winter Olympic gold won by anyone from the Southern Hemisphere, and in Australia his name became a verb.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
