About the print
1-0. Sunderland were in the Second Division, and third from bottom of it, when Bob Stokoe took over in November 1972.
In May they played Leeds United at Wembley, the holders, and one of the strongest sides in Europe. Ian Porterfield volleyed in from a corner after thirty two minutes.
In the second half Jim Montgomery pushed out a header from Trevor Cherry and then, still falling, got an arm to Peter Lorimer's shot from six yards, which is generally held to be the best save made at Wembley. No second division club had won the FA Cup for more than forty years.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
