Vera Caslavska Art Print, She Looked Away, Mexico City 1968, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
She turned her head away. Two months before the Mexico City Olympics, Soviet tanks entered Prague. Vera Caslavska had signed the Two Thousand Words manifesto and went into hiding in the mountains, training on a log and lifting sacks of coal.
She arrived late and won four golds and two silvers. Twice the judging was revised in a way that promoted a Soviet gymnast to share the top step with her. Both times, as the Soviet anthem played, she turned her head to the right and looked down.
She finished with seven Olympic golds. The authorities then took her career, her coaching licence and her public life away from her for twenty years.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
