About the print

They gave him a rank and a service number. Polish soldiers leaving the Soviet Union in 1942 bought an orphaned bear cub from a boy in Iran for some tinned meat. He grew up in the company, wrestled the men, drank beer and slept in the tents.

When the unit was to sail for Italy and the ship would not carry animals, they enlisted him: a name, a rank, a service number and a pay book.

At Monte Cassino in 1944 he carried crates of artillery shells to the guns and, by every account of the men who were there, never dropped one. The 22nd Company took a bear carrying a shell as its emblem. He finished his life in Edinburgh Zoo.
