About the print

Thirty. On 27 April 1993 a Zambian Air Force aircraft carrying the national football team to a World Cup qualifier came down in the Atlantic shortly after taking off from Libreville. Twenty five passengers and five crew were killed. Almost the whole team went with it.

That side had beaten Italy four nil at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and were among the favourites for the next Africa Cup of Nations.

A new squad was assembled from whoever was left and whoever could be found. Ten months later Zambia reached the final of that tournament and lost it to Nigeria. Eighteen years after that, in 2012, Zambia won the Africa Cup for the first time. The final was played in Libreville.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
