European Cups, won consecutively: 1964 and 1965.
The manager
Helenio Herrera, born in Buenos Aires and raised in Casablanca, arrived at Internazionale in 1960 after success at Barcelona.
He imposed control over diet, sleep, training and press contact to a degree that was new in Italian football, and used dressing room slogans and collective ritual as part of the method.
The system
The shape placed a sweeper, Armando Picchi, behind a marking line, with the rest of the team compact and the transition to attack rehearsed rather than improvised.
Giacinto Facchetti, at left back, was licensed to attack and scored ten league goals in 1965-66, unprecedented for the position.
Luis Suarez, signed from Barcelona in 1961 for a world record fee, supplied the long passing that made the counter-attack work.
The results
Serie A titles in 1963, 1965 and 1966.
European Cup 1964, beating Real Madrid 3-1 in Vienna.
European Cup 1965, beating Benfica 1-0 at San Siro in heavy rain, Jair scoring.
Intercontinental Cup in 1964 and 1965.
Lisbon, 1967
Celtic won the European Cup final 2-1 after conceding an early penalty, with a performance built on continuous attacking.
It is routinely presented as the defeat of catenaccio by attacking football. Inter were also without Suarez, injured, and had played a punishing domestic run-in.
The reputation
Catenaccio is used as a pejorative for negative football. Applied to this side it is inaccurate: the team scored consistently and its defining player was an attacking full back.
Why it goes on a wall
Because it is the most misunderstood great team in football. The system was not a refusal to play. It was a decision about when to.
The system that won Europe.
