Duckadam Art Print, Hero of Seville, Steaua Bucharest 1986, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
Four penalties, four saves. On 7 May 1986, in Seville, Steaua Bucharest and Barcelona finished the European Cup final without a goal. Barcelona took four penalties in the shootout. Helmut Duckadam saved all four, three times diving to his right, then, when everyone knew where he was going, once to his left.
No goalkeeper had done it before. Barcelona did not convert a single penalty, and Steaua became the first club from the Eastern bloc to win the European Cup.
He was twenty-seven. Within weeks an injury to his right arm, and the blood clot found afterwards, ended his career at that level for good. Romania called him the Hero of Seville and never stopped.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
