Emil Zatopek Art Print, One Medal Given Away, Prague 1966, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
€44.90
About the print
He gave the medal away. Ron Clarke set nineteen world records and never won an Olympic gold. In 1966 Emil Zatopek invited him to Prague, showed him the city, and rode with him to the airport.
At the gate Zatopek pushed a small package into Clarke's bag and said only that he deserved it. Clarke opened it in the air. Inside was the gold medal Zatopek had won in the 10,000 metres at Helsinki in 1952. Not a replica. The medal itself.
Clarke said afterwards that he had never been given anything like it, and that he would value it more than any medal he might have won for himself.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
