Gino Bartali Art Print, Eight Hundred, Florence to Assisi, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
Around eight hundred people. He had won the Giro and the Tour, so nobody questioned a champion putting in long training rides. Between 1943 and 1944 Gino Bartali rode the road between Florence and Assisi again and again with photographs and forged identity papers hidden inside the tubes of his bicycle.
If he was stopped, he asked them not to touch the frame, because it was calibrated. The network he worked with is credited with saving around eight hundred people.
He refused to talk about it for the rest of his life, and told his son that good is something you do, not something you discuss. It came out properly only after he died.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
