Lawrence Lemieux Art Print, Seoul 1988, Vintage Black and White Sailing Wall Art
About the print
Second place, and he turned out of the race. Lawrence Lemieux was lying second in the Finn class at the Seoul Olympics, sailing towards a silver medal, when he saw a capsized boat from the Singapore team in a force six sea.
One sailor was injured in the water. The other was clinging to the hull and drifting. Lemieux left the course, sailed upwind to reach them, pulled both men aboard and stayed with them until a patrol boat arrived.
Then he went back and finished twenty-second. He did not get the medal. The International Olympic Committee gave him the Pierre de Coubertin medal instead, awarded to fewer than twenty people in its history.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
