About the print

First, second and third. Ford had spent four years and an enormous amount of money to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, and with an hour left they had the podium and nothing to fear.

Management then decided the photograph mattered more than the race and ordered the cars to cross the line together. Ken Miles, who had already won Daytona and Sebring that year and was leading, slowed to let it happen.

The organisers ruled that the car which had started further back had covered more ground and was therefore the winner. Miles finished second in the race he had led, and was killed testing two months later.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
