About the print
— THE STORY —
Sam Langford was perhaps the strongest boxer never to fight for a world title: the colour line denied him one for a quarter of a century. Pure power and ring science, he beat or troubled the best of his era, and the champions avoided him carefully: against him there was everything to lose and nothing to gain. He fought hundreds of times, wherever they paid him, and kept climbing into the ring even as his sight abandoned him, nearly blind, trusting craft alone. He was found years later poor and forgotten, until a public collection restored him some peace. Historians place him among the greatest of all. The ring denied him the crown; memory owes him everything.

There is a moment almost all of us lived through, and almost nobody photographed: an older person telling you about a match you never saw. Lost Teams tells the stories of teams and champions who no longer exist, and what they left behind.
Every print begins with a true fact: a number that looks like a misprint and is not.
Hang it. One day someone will ask you what it is, and you will know where to begin.
