Lou Gehrig Art Print, The Luckiest Man, Yankee Stadium 1939, Vintage Wall Art
About the print
Two thousand one hundred and thirty consecutive games. Fourteen years, through broken fingers and concussions and a back that seized. The record stood for fifty-six years.
In 1939 his body began failing in ways nobody could explain. He took himself out of the lineup in May. The diagnosis came in June: a disease that would kill him within two years.
On the fourth of July, in front of a full Yankee Stadium, he stood at a microphone and told sixty-two thousand people that he considered himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. He was thirty-six. He died twenty-three months later.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
