About the print

Two fouls, and one jump left. In August 1936, in long jump qualifying at the Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens fouled twice. A third would have put him out of a competition he was expected to win.

The man who walked over to help was Luz Long: the German record holder, the athlete the home crowd had come to see, and the rival with most to gain from Owens going out. He suggested Owens move his take off back and jump from safely behind the board.

Owens qualified. He won the gold. Long was the first to reach him, and they walked off the field together, in front of the officials of a regime that had planned a very different afternoon.
