About the print

Two one. Brazil needed only a draw. The newspapers had printed the champions edition that morning, the medals had been engraved, and the president of FIFA had a speech prepared in Portuguese.

Something close to two hundred thousand people were inside the Maracana, the largest crowd ever to watch a football match. Brazil scored first, Uruguay equalised, and with eleven minutes left Alcides Ghiggia shot past the near post.

What people who were there describe is not the noise but what followed it. The goalkeeper who was blamed said forty years later that in Brazil the longest sentence is thirty years, and he had served more.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
