Matthias Sindelar Art Print, The Paper Man, Vienna 1938, Vintage Black and White Wall Art

About the print

They called him the Paper Man. He looked too light to be knocked over, and he never was. Matthias Sindelar captained the Wunderteam, the finest Austrian side ever assembled, and after the Anschluss in 1938 he refused to play for Germany.

A farewell match was staged between Austria and Germany, arranged to end in a polite draw. Sindelar scored. Then he danced in celebration directly in front of the Nazi officials in the stand, and would not give the salute.

Ten months later he was found dead in his flat in Vienna. The circumstances have never been settled. He was thirty-five, and he had spent his last year refusing.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
