About the print

20.06 seconds. Peter Norman ran that in the 200 metres final in Mexico City in 1968 and took the silver medal. It is still the Australian record. No Australian has run faster in more than half a century.

Almost nobody remembers the race. They remember the podium, where Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists and Norman, the white Australian on the second step, wore the badge of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. He had asked for one.

Australia did not forgive him. He was left out of the 1972 team despite running the qualifying times, and he spent the rest of his working life outside the sport. When he died in 2006, Smith and Carlos flew to Melbourne and carried his coffin.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
