About the print

Thirty-seven wins from fifty-one starts. He was bought cheaply, looked ungainly, and lost his first four races. Then between 1929 and 1932 Phar Lap won thirty-seven of fifty-one, in a country flattened by the Depression that badly needed something to be true.

Someone tried to shoot him days before the 1931 Melbourne Cup. He won the following race anyway. Taken to North America, he won the richest race on the continent at the first attempt and was dead within a fortnight in California.

The cause has been argued over for ninety years. His hide is in Melbourne, his skeleton in Wellington and his heart in Canberra.

Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
