Seoul 1988 Art Print, The 100 Metres Final, Vintage Athletics Wall Art
About the print
Nine seventy-nine. Ben Johnson ran the hundred metres in nine seconds and seventy-nine hundredths, looked to his right and raised a finger before the line.
Three days later he was stripped of the gold medal for stanozolol and put on a plane home. The medal went to Carl Lewis.
What emerged over the following twenty years is that six of the eight men in that final were at some point connected to performance enhancing drugs, including the man who was awarded the gold. It is remembered as the dirtiest race in history, and the reason it is remembered at all is that only one of them was caught that week.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
