Lost Teams print
Togo Art Print, The Serum Run to Nome 1925, Vintage Black and White Wall Art
About the print
Four hundred and eighteen kilometres, the longest leg of the run. In January 1925 diphtheria reached Nome, in Alaska, in winter, with no way in by sea or air. Antitoxin was moved roughly a thousand kilometres by a relay of dog teams in temperatures near minus fifty.
Twenty teams took part. The longest and by far the most dangerous stretch, including a crossing of the sea ice of Norton Sound in a storm, was led by Togo, a twelve year old Siberian husky in Leonhard Seppala's team.
The final fifty five kilometres were run by another team, whose lead dog Balto got the statue in Central Park. Togo did the impossible part.
Stories worth passing on, not just remembering.
