About the print

Three golds, and a leg brace until she was twelve. Wilma Rudolph had polio as a child and doctors told her family she would never walk properly again. Her mother and her many brothers and sisters took turns massaging the leg every day for years.

At sixteen she won an Olympic bronze in the relay. At twenty, in Rome, she won the 100 metres, the 200 metres and the relay, and became the fastest woman in the world in front of the largest television audience the Games had yet had.

She was the twentieth of twenty-two children in a segregated Tennessee town, and she insisted that her homecoming parade be integrated.
