Lost Teams story

Aberdeen 1983: The Last Time Madrid Lost

Aberdeen, Cup Winners Cup winners in 1983.

The minute of John Hewitt's header at the Nya Ullevi in Gothenburg, 11 May 1983.

Who they were

Aberdeen had won the Scottish league in 1980, the first club outside Glasgow to do it since 1965. The squad was built almost entirely at home: Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish, Willie Miller, Gordon Strachan, Eric Black, John Hewitt.

Alex Ferguson had taken the job in 1978. He was forty one in 1983 and had never worked outside Scotland.

Getting there

They knocked out Bayern Munich in the quarter-final, drawing in Munich and then winning three two at Pittodrie after going behind twice. It is still the match Aberdeen supporters name first.

The final

It rained all day in Gothenburg and the pitch was heavy. Both sides said afterwards that it suited Aberdeen, who were used to it.

Eric Black scored after seven minutes. Juanito equalised from a penalty after a back pass went wrong.

Neither side scored again in normal time. In the hundred and twelfth minute Mark McGhee crossed from the left and John Hewitt, on as a substitute, headed it in.

After

Aberdeen beat Hamburg over two legs later that year to win the European Super Cup. They won the Scottish league again in 1984 and 1985.

Ferguson left for Manchester United in November 1986.

The line that has held

Real Madrid have played nine Champions League finals since 1983 and won all nine of them. The side that beat them in Gothenburg came from a city of two hundred thousand people and had a manager nobody outside Scotland had heard of.
