Lost Teams story

Brooklyn Dodgers: They Won It, Then Left

The Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955.

Seasons in Brooklyn, and one championship in all of them.

Wait till next year

The Dodgers lost the World Series in 1916, 1920, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953. The last five of those were to the New York Yankees.

The phrase attached to the club was not invented for them but belonged to them more than to anyone else.

1955

They lost the first two games to the Yankees and won the series in seven. Johnny Podres pitched a shutout in the last one. Sandy Amoros, brought on as a defensive substitute, caught a ball down the left field line that would otherwise have tied it.

Brooklyn had a parade.

O'Malley

Walter O'Malley had been trying since 1952 to replace Ebbets Field, which held about thirty two thousand and had almost no parking. He wanted to build a domed stadium at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush.

Robert Moses, who controlled what got built in New York, refused to help him assemble the land and offered a site in Queens instead. O'Malley declined it.

In October 1957 he announced the club would play in Los Angeles.

The last day

About six thousand seven hundred people came to the last match. The organist played "Auld Lang Syne".

After

The Dodgers have won the World Series several times in Los Angeles.

The site of Ebbets Field is a housing development. There is a plaque.
