The score in the final of the 1992 European Championship, in Gothenburg on 26 June, between Denmark and Germany. Denmark had not qualified for the tournament.
Not invited
Denmark finished second in their qualifying group. Yugoslavia finished first and were going to Sweden.
Through the spring of 1992 Yugoslavia broke apart. UEFA removed the team from the tournament ten days before it began, and Denmark, as runners up, were called up in their place.
The players were on holiday. The squad assembled with nine days to prepare and travelled with kit borrowed from the under twenty one side, because there had been no reason to prepare a senior set.
The tournament
Denmark drew with England, lost to Sweden, then beat France to reach the semi-finals.
In the semi-final they met the Netherlands, the holders, with Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard in the side. The match finished level and went to penalties. Schmeichel saved from Van Basten.
The final
Germany had been reunified less than two years earlier and had won the World Cup in 1990. They were the favourites and it was not close to being an argument.
John Jensen scored after eighteen minutes. Kim Vilfort made it two after seventy eight.
Between those goals Schmeichel turned a low shot from Jürgen Klinsmann behind, a save he has since described as the best of his career.
Afterwards
Kim Vilfort had been travelling between the squad and home throughout the tournament. His seven year old daughter, Line, was in hospital with leukaemia, and she had insisted he go on playing. She died that August, about six weeks after the final.
Denmark have not won a major tournament since.
Why the number is the score
Two nil is on the print because the margin was never supposed to exist. A team that was not in the tournament beat the world champions in the final, ten days after being told to pack.
