The margin at the start of the second half: thirty five to three.
Before
The Oilers were a founding club of the American Football League in 1960 and won its first two championships. After the leagues merged they did not reach a final again.
In the late seventies, under Bum Phillips and with Earl Campbell running, they lost two consecutive conference finals to Pittsburgh, and the city adopted them anyway. Fifty thousand people came to the Astrodome to greet the team after the second defeat. That period is called Luv Ya Blue.
3 January 1993
Houston had beaten Buffalo in Buffalo the week before, in the last match of the regular season. They met again seven days later in the same stadium.
Houston led twenty eight to three at half time and thirty five to three three minutes into the third quarter. Buffalo's first-choice quarterback was injured and not playing.
Buffalo scored four touchdowns in seven minutes. They tied it with three minutes left and won it with a field goal in overtime, forty one to thirty eight.
No team in the history of the league has recovered from further behind.
After
The Oilers won twelve matches the following season and then fell apart, winning two the year after. Bud Adams, the owner since 1959, wanted a new stadium in Houston and did not get one.
In 1995 he agreed a move to Nashville. The last two seasons in Houston were played in front of crowds that had stopped coming, and the club moved in 1997, spending two years in temporary grounds before the new stadium opened.
What is in Houston now
The Texans began playing in 2002. They wear a different name and different colours.
The Oilers' colours and name were retired by the club that took them to Tennessee, which renamed itself the Titans.
