European Cups, won in consecutive seasons, by a club that had been in the English second division three years before the first of them.
Where it started
Brian Clough took over at Nottingham Forest in January 1975. The club was in the Second Division and thirteenth in it. He had been sacked by Leeds United forty four days into the job the previous autumn, in what remains the most examined dismissal in English football.
Peter Taylor joined him in 1976.
Up
Forest finished third in the Second Division in 1976-77. Three teams went up and they were the third.
Champions
In their first season back in the First Division they won the league, seven points ahead of Liverpool, who were the reigning champions of Europe. They also won the League Cup that season.
It was the first English title in the club's history.
Europe
The European Cup in 1978-79 paired them with Liverpool in the first round, and Forest knocked them out. They beat Malmo one nil in the final in Munich, the goal from Trevor Francis, who had become the first million pound footballer earlier that season.
The following year they beat Hamburg one nil in Madrid and kept it.
What is left
Forest have not won the English league since 1978. They have been relegated, promoted, and relegated again, and spent twenty three years outside the top division before returning in 2022.
Two European Cups sit in the cabinet of a club that has won one league title. No other club in Europe has that arrangement.
