Seoul, 31 May 2002, the opening match of the tournament.
The two teams
France had won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. They had Zidane, Henry, Trezeguet and Vieira, though Zidane was injured and did not play.
Senegal were at their first World Cup. The coach was Bruno Metsu, a Frenchman who had been managing in the French lower divisions a few years earlier. Most of the squad played in France, several of them in the second division.
The goal
A free kick came into the French area, Emmanuel Petit and Fabien Barthez both went for it and neither took it, and Papa Bouba Diop turned it in from close range.
He ran to the corner, took his shirt off and put it on the grass, and the substitutes came out and danced around it. The celebration became as well known as the goal.
The rest of it
France drew with Uruguay and lost to Denmark. They went out in the group stage without scoring.
Senegal drew with Denmark and Uruguay, having led Uruguay three nil. In the round of sixteen they came from behind to beat Sweden with a golden goal from Henri Camara.
In the quarter-final Turkey scored a golden goal through Ilhan Mansiz in the ninety fourth minute.
After
Senegal did not qualify again until 2018.
Bruno Metsu died in 2013, at fifty nine. Papa Bouba Diop died in 2020, at forty two.
